Keep your home’s plumbing running smoothly with these tips:
Know Your System
Label the Shut-Offs: Locate your main water shut-off valve (typically near the water meter or where the main line enters the house) and tag it. Also, find the individual shut-off valves for toilets, sinks, and the water heater.
Prevent the Big Chill: Know where exterior hose bibbs are. In areas prone to freezing, disconnect all garden hoses in the fall and shut off the interior valves feeding these lines.
Drain Maintenance & Clog Prevention
Ditch the Chemicals: Avoid harsh liquid chemical drain cleaners. They can corrode pipes and damage plumbing fixtures.
Address Slow Drains Early: Address slow drains immediately. Use a simple, inexpensive plastic drain snake to clear hair and gunk before it becomes a total blockage.
Protect the Garbage Disposal: Treat your disposal with care. Never put grease, coffee grounds, bones, or fibrous foods (like celery or potato peels) down the drain.
Water Heater Care
Flush the Tank: To prevent sediment buildup, flush your water heater tank once a year.
Check the Anode Rod: Have a plumber inspect and replace the sacrificial anode rod in your water heater every few years to significantly extend the life of the unit.
Leak Detection & Fixture Maintenance
Test for Hidden Leaks: You can test for hidden toilet leaks by placing a few drops of food coloring into the toilet tank. If the color seeps into the bowl without flushing, you have a flapper leak.
Inspect Exposed Pipes: Regularly check the pipes under your sinks for slow drips, rust, or warped cabinet wood.
Replace Supply Hoses: Washing machine hoses wear out and can burst, causing severe flooding. Replace braided or rubber hoses every three to five years.
